The Department of Agriculture has approved the importation of 16,000 metric tons of white onions due to its dwindling supply in the country.
Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr confirmed that he has approved the order last Monday.
"Ang stocks natin [ng white onion] sa bansa ay depleted na. But marami pa tayong red onion. Ang red onion natin is good until March of next year. So, limited quantity lang ito ng white onion na ini-import para lang to stabilize prices of white onions," Tiu Laurel said.
Tiu Laurel said the DA timed the importation so it won't coincide with the harvest of local onions by early next year.
"Dapat magparating yun by end of December para hindi maapektuhan yung ating mga farmers sa harvest season nila. I think by end of this week or early next week, papasok na yun in limited quantity," Tiu Laurel added.
"By batches ang ginagawa ko para hindi rin ma-flood yung market at hindi ma-affect yung mga existing stocks ng red din," he said.
In early 2023, the price of onions soared to as high as P600 per kilo allegedly due to a shortage.
