In an alternate 19th-century England where magic once flourished but has since faded into myth, Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell follows the lives of two very different magicians who revive the ancient art in their quest for power, knowledge, and glory.
Mr. Norrell, a reclusive scholar with a deep fear of the unknown, emerges from obscurity to become England's foremost practicing magician. He seeks to control magic by hoarding its secrets, proving its practical utility in aiding the British war effort against Napoleon. His rise to fame, however, is shadowed by his dangerous pact with a mysterious, malevolent faerie known only as the "Gentleman with the Thistle-Down Hair."
Enter Jonathan Strange, a young and daring gentleman who, unlike Norrell, is driven by a burning desire for adventure and discovery. As Strange becomes Norrell's pupil, the two magicians' contrasting philosophies set them on a collision course. Strange's reckless pursuit of forbidden knowledge leads him down dark and perilous paths, including encounters with the fey realms and a descent into madness.
