Best of the Best? Senate or Barangay?

Would regionally elected senators be better for the country than nationally elected senators?

Although the nation would like to know the truth behind the controversies surrounding the New Senate Building (NSB), the people also expects their Senators to act and conduct their hearings properly, orderly and clearly. Hearings the youth can emulate and understand principles of governance, democracy and accountability relative to national security among others.

We do not expect a Senate hearing to look like barangay mishaps of couples arguing about a family house they are building.

Wag naman maging parang barangay yung senate hearing ng away mag asawa na nagpapagawa ng bahay. Nakakahiya....pero very entertaining...

Obviously, nangibabaw ang politika at personal na away ng dalawang kampo sa eleksyon.

This is bound to happen when senators are nationally elected and interest collides over local territories. The country will most likely end up with the few rich and the famous, not necesarily with the best and proportional representation. The manner of electing Senators can be changed through a Constitutional Convention. If the delegates decide, Senators can instead be elected regionally. Thus, giving Senators regional constituency they can represent in a national platform. People can also have more senators to represent the regions proportionally.

It will also allow the constituents to know their candidates better and personally and elect for themselves the best they know. Through a Constitutional Convention the people can also create a stronger justice system that will be independent, transparent, and jury courts that will have full authority and power to investigate and penalize all corrupt government officials from the highest to the lowest rank. Thus, isolating and protecting politically exposed cases tainted by corruption from politicians and political pressures.

I say this not to take anything away from our elected senators who are all skilled and experts in their own fields. But to only bring to light systems and concepts in government we can use to create a better nation for our children.
