PPP, if I’m not mistaken is a metric used by economists to measure the size of a country’s economy not in nominal terms or the total GDP size in US Dollars but in the purchasing power of it’s local currency against another —the American green back as is usually the case.
This fact was highlighted by international media only recently but the World Bank confirmed Russia long overtook Japan as the fourth largest economy in PPP terms three years ago in 2021 as shown in the graph.
China, Russia, and India of the BRICS alliance are now among the top five largest economies of the world in PPP terms with the US and Japan rounding up list.
However, Japan’s currency the Yen has devalued very significantly against the US Dollar in the past three years alone. So I will not he surprised if this year’s list may no longer include Japan on the top five.
The world is changing. The multi polar world’s unmistakable shape is clear as day, led by the BRICS countries and the Global South, with Asia especially ASEAN and China playing a large and crucial part in a geopolitical event I never dreamed will happen in my lifetime.
Bongbong Marcos unfortunately, is set to squander this multi-generational opportunity to claim the Philippines’ rightful place in the history of global politics and economy.
It’s sad to be a Filipino today. But I’m more saddened for the future prospects of my young children —and their children—if our current leaders do not reconsider the direction they are heading.
A direction that may compromise the life we all aspire as a nation and as a people that is: to be truly Filipino.
To be truly independent.
To be truly decolonized.
To be true to our own identity.
To be true to our love of country.
To be true to to the promise of a peaceful and comfortable life of prosperity where no Filipino will have to migrate to work for and be enslaved in another country.
It’s wishful thinking I know, but dreams are still for free. So dream on Pinoys our time will come.
