PHPineapples were named after pine cones
Christopher Columbus first saw pineapples while exploring the island of Guadeloupe in 1493, but the first recorded reference to a fruit of this name wasn't until 1694. Later, in the 20th century, the pineapple earned its official scientific name, "ananas cosmosus," which literally translates to "excellent tufted fruit."
