Pineapples were named after pine cones

Christopher Columbus first saw pineapples while exploring the island of Guadeloupe in 1493, but the first recorded reference to a fruit of this name wasn't until 1694. Because of its spiky exterior, a different group of European explorers named it "You do not have permission to view the full content of this post. Later, in the 20th century, the pineapple earned its official scientific name, "ananas cosmosus," which literally translates to "excellent tufted fruit."
