The art of self-reflection: 10 questions to ask yourself for personal growth
What does personal growth mean to you? And have you been thinking about how to be your best self all the time?
We all have ideas about what it means to grow as a personâŚsome of them may be concerned with developing our character or succeeding at our passions.
Well, thereâs no right or wrong answer. It really depends on what youâre hoping to get out of life.
Here are 10 questions to ask yourself that can help you on your quest for personal growth.
Letâs get startedâŚ
1) âWhat am I grateful to have today?â
Hereâs a question you can start with: ask yourself what youâre grateful to have in your life. Many of us are too busy with other tasks â such as working at our career or taking care of family â to the point that we have never had the time to stop and reflect.
But personal growth can only start with self-awareness; and thatâs why itâs important to make a list of the things youâre grateful for.
Hereâs how I do it: by keeping a bullet journal and writing down my thoughts every single day.
Some examples of things I have been grateful for are:
- Having a nice conversation with the taxi driver
- Finding time to take a walk in the park
- Being able to treat myself to a delicious meal
2) âWhen was the last time I learned something new?â
Hereâs the second question to ask yourself: âWhen was the last time I learned something new?âAnd I know what youâre thinking: how does this relate to personal growth? Well, itâs important that we always keep improving ourselves by You do not have permission to view the full content of this post. Log in or register now. or pursuing a passion.
Thatâs why asking yourself this question can be helpful in letting you know if youâve gotten too comfortable in your daily routine.
For example, youâve stayed at the same job for many years and have gotten bored. You feel like youâre living on autopilot and every day is the same.
But when you make an effort to consistently upgrade yourself, things feel exciting. Youâll feel like youâre growing as a person â and youâll gain more confidence as well.
3) âWho are the people I value most?â
Next, youâve got to think about the people in your life â and whoâs most important to you.For many of us, our family will come to mind. And we might also think of our partner, our best friend, or even a colleague who has been there for us during tough times.
This goes back to self-awareness. When you know who you value most in your life, it helps you:
- Enjoy the time you spend together
- Think about how you can treat them better
- Find out what you appreciate most about them
4) âHow can I be kinder to these people?â
Have you ever stayed up all night thinking about how badly youâve hurt someone?Well, I have. And itâs not the nicest thing to reflect on â it can bring up your insecurities and make you feel guilty.
However, I personally came out of such an experience feeling like I had grown as a person. Why?
Thatâs because I had asked myself: âYou do not have permission to view the full content of this post. Log in or register now.â That allowed me to see where I fell short in that relationship, and take steps to do better.
When you find out whoâs most important to you in your life, youâll feel motivated to make amends and become your best self â so theyâll stick around!

7) âHow can I stay true to myself?â
If you want to lead a meaningful life on your own terms, youâll also need to ask yourself how you can connect with your truest self. This means you need to find out how much of your identity is tied to social norms and the expectations other people have of you.
Thatâs why personal growth is something you need to cultivate and maintain. It helps you to:

spirituality should be about empowering yourself. Not suppressing emotions, not judging others, but forming a pure connection with who you are at your core.
8) âWhat are some things Iâm proud of?â
Another question to ask is whether or not youâre proud of yourself â and this could relate to anything youâve ever done in your life.
It doesnât have to be a career milestone or the time you ĎĂĄĂd off your house. In fact, it would be more productive for you to look inward and consider how much youâve actually grown.
Maybe youâre someone who used to have unhealthy relationships, but youâve stopped giving attention to people who donât care about you â thatâs something to be proud of.
So whatâs the purpose of asking yourself this question? Well, it helps you see how far youâve come.
And itâs important to realize how much youâre actually capable of, becauseâŚ

- Accept that you will experience pain
- Believe that the hard moments will pass
- Encourage yourself when youâre having a difficult time
10) âWhat do I have to look forward to?â
Once youâve reflected on the questions above, think about what you can look forward to in the future. As I mentioned, you may want to transform your life completely and let the path before you unfold. In that case, it might be difficult to have a tangible goal in mindâŚ
Let me tell you a secret: itâs enough to look forward to waking up to a new day and figuring out where to go from there.
