The organization promotes the inclusion of people with disabilities in sports and provides them with opportunities to develop physical fitness, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community. The Special Olympics also offers a variety of programs and initiatives that promote inclusion, education and health for people with disabilities. The organization has over 5 million athletes in 190 countries and has been recognized for its efforts to promote inclusion and acceptance of people with disabilities around the world.
