Critics say folk Catholicism manifests aspects of idolatry and fanaticism. Examples: the penitensya flagellants on Holy Thursdays and the male devotees of the Black Nazarene, esoteric interpretations of scriptural events, but scriptural nevertheless in substance and spirit, although indigenous in E×ρréššion.

Folk sociology reveals itself in many of our Catholic rituals that combine the celebratory and the contemplative. Vibrancy is inherent in symbolic objects, incantations, meaningful gestures, vestments and Eucharistic food.

Folk Catholicism is the secret of our church’s durability and integrity. It is symmetrical to our racial culture. All our family values—obeying our parents, respect for elders, fidelity in marriage—are inspired by Christianity. It’s the same with Truth in Christ, Sanctity of Life, and Fear of God—reasons enough for a simple child-like faith.

Filipino folk Catholicism stands tall in the world. Only in the Philippines will you find churches jampacked on Sundays and important feasts. Many cathedrals in Europe which were once deserted museum pieces are now filled by Filipino OFWs. They energize worship with their amazing brand of folk Catholicism.

For social convention. I still practice catholicism even i am atheist in belief, dahil i have nothing better to impart to the next generation if I start from scratch.

I could pretend that i am making up my own ideas as atheist, but really, i'm just exposing myself to dangerous secular ideologies like Marxism and nazism. Notice how Che Guevarra (marxist) was kinda popular to some teens back in the days, or maybe until now. They do not know what that kind of ideology can imply of widely adopted. Also there are the empty ideologies like consumerism and hedonism.

But say even without that. Naging secular tayo without dangerous ideologies. There are certain moralities we enjoy that we would lose context to.

One example, ano ang rationale mo kung bakit masama mkipagtalik sa iba ang asawa mo, without any religious context.

Swerte pa nga tayo dahil catholicism ang dominant satin, though gaslighted, you are free to not practice. What if katulad ng Iraq, wherein ipapapatay ka once tagged an infedel? Or Secular like china, kung saan tyranized ang buhay mo kahit walang religion.

Not saying i disagree with the criticsm you proposed, but are they really that bad?
