wow this is a very interesting topic and a huge topic, in the standard model of quantum physics there is called space-time and one function in it is called "field" (electric, magnetic etc.) and then one field is the quantum field which is divided into 2: matter field (electron, etc.) and the force field (photon, etc.), now scientist had a hard time figuring out what makes photon mass-less and what makes electron massive, so they theorized that there must be a third field that assigns the particles' masses according to their interaction with this third field and they call it the higgs field which people now call the god particle on the grounds of giving mass to other particles

theoretical physics badly needs higgs field to exist or else their standard model of quantum physics will disintegrate because all particles will move at light speed

so the god particle name is wrong since higgs particles don't actually give masses to objects but it is the interaction of higgs field with other quantum fields assigning the mass
