President Duterte has agreed to suspend operations of online cockfights or e-****** following the reported kidnapping of at least 31 players of the popular betting pastime, Senate President Vicente Sotto III said on Monday, Feb. 28.
“Good news, I was informed that the President agreed to suspend the licenses of seven e-****** (companies) so by Friday (March 4) the operations will stop,” Sotto disclosed during a town hall meeting in Lucena City.
After the event, he told reporters that it was Sen. Ronald dela Rosa who informed him of Duterte’s decision.
Dela Rosa launched last Thursday, Feb. 24, the inquiry in the case of the missing cockfight players, as chairman of the committee on public order and dangerous drugs.
During the first hearing, the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. (Pagcor), which issues the licenses for the e-****** operators, said it was amenable to suspending the permits, but such a directive should come from the Office of the President.
Sotto and Lacson last week pushed for a resolution calling for the suspension of e-****** operations.
For his part, Sen. Bong Go said he supports the call to temporarily suspend the operations of e-******, which could be the cause of the disappearance of 31 cockfight players (sabungero) since April 2021.
“As a senator, I appeal to everyone to join the investigation. Many lives were affected. Missing people must come out and the truth must come out,” he added.
