The story follows Suzume, a seventeen-year-old girl who lives in a quiet town in Kyushu. After meeting a young man on a journey to find doors, she discovers a strange door, old but still standing despite the ruins surrounding it. Before long, doors all over Japan begin to open, bringing misfortune from beyond. With this, Suzume must embark on her own journey to close these doors.
In addition to directing the film, Shinkai is credited with creating the original work and the script. Masayoshi Tanaka, who also has collaborated with Shinkai's previous works, will provide character design. Kenichi Tsuchiya will serve as the animation director alongside Takumi Tanji as the art director.
The cast and further information on the characters are yet to be announced.
Suzume no Tojimari will open in fall 2022.
