Unvaccinated = Death Sentence according to Biden

President Joe Biden said the unvaccinated in the U.S. face “a winter of severe illness and death” amid a resurgence of coronavirus cases and the emergence of the highly contagious Omicron variant.

“It’s here now and it’s spreading and it’s gonna increase,” the president said about the Omicron variant in a briefing Thursday at the White House. “We are looking at a winter of severe illness and death for the unvaccinated — for themselves, their families and the hospitals they’ll soon overwhelm.

But there’s good news: If you’re vaccinated and you have your booster shot, you’re protected from severe illness and death,” the president added.

“We’re going to protect our economic recovery if we do this. We’re going to keep our school and businesses open if we do this,” Biden said.

Also on Thursday, vaccine experts advising the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention voted unanimously to recommend Moderna and Pfizer‘s messenger RNA-based Covid-19 vaccines over Johnson & Johnson‘s jab.

The 15 members voted in support of a resolution Thursday that stated the messenger RNA-based vaccines “are preferred” over J&J’s shot. The updated guidance came amid new findings from the agency about cases of a rare but serious blood clotting condition that has occurred in a small number of people who received the vaccine.

Pfizer (ticker: PFE), meanwhile, has asked the Food and Drug Administration to fully approve the Covid-19 vaccine it makes with partner BioNTech (BNTX) for adolescents aged 12 to 15.

The Pfizer vaccine is fully approved by the FDA for people 16 years old and above, and authorized under an emergency use authorization for those aged 12 to 16 years.

On Wall Street, Citigroup (C) told its employees in the New York-area that “given the current situation, if you’re able to work from home now through the holidays, please feel free to speak to your manager about doing so.”

The Wall Street Journal reported that a memo to the bank’s staff added: “Like all of you, we hoped that Covid would be behind us by now, but greatly appreciate your adaptability, support for your colleagues and continued adherence to our safety measures.”

Morgan Stanley (MS) also was said to be encouraging workers to work remotely through the beginning of next year.

In professional sports, the National Basketball Association will increase daily testing and face mask use for players and staff through the holiday season, according to a memo obtained by ESPN, as infections among players jump.
