Narcissists are always trying to find that opening into your soul, the chink in your armor, any unhealed trauma and/ or unfulfilled wishes and desires within you.
Once that narcissist identifies these aspects of you, for simplicity let's just refer to them as your “vulnerabilities", the narcissist plays against these vulnerabilities with the view to achieving maximum manipulative effect.
The narcissist, in the early stages of getting to know them, will interrogate you, test how you react to certain “offensive, inappropriate, demeaning" comments, nefarious actions and general inconsistencies between their words and actions.
By seeing how you react to such things, they are effectively testing you and gathering information from you, they are ascertaining, your potential for providing good supply and being an object of negative projection.
All of these things the narcissist does, are red flags. Your gut will tell you something is off.
