PHA 22- year-old man from Beijing, China died after downing a 1.5-liter bottle of Coca-Cola in only 10 minutes during a hot day.
The man (name withheld) gulped down the drink in an attempt to stay hydrated. He then went to the Chaoyang Hospital in Beijing about six hours later after getting a swollen stomach and severe pain, as per the Clinics and Research in Hepatology and Gastroenterology via Daily Mail last Friday, Sept. 24.
The patient had an elevated heart rate, low blood pressure and was breathing rapidly when he arrived at the hospital, though doctors said he does not have any underlying conditions. He died within 18 hours of being treated.
Experts said the man had a gas buildup in his body due to consuming a large amount of the drink. It was then discovered that the buildup started in his intestines and traveled into his liver, which caused him to go into hepatic ischemia or “shock liver.”
